Unpacking the EFC euthanasia brochure that's going viral
Have you seen the EFC’s brochure, Euthanasia in Canada? It’s getting attention on social media. This brochure highlights some of our concerns with Canada’s MAiD laws, and with proposals for further expansions. If you look at the whole brochure, it’s clear that the EFC opposes euthanasia and is concerned about planned and proposed expansions. Many of the comments we’ve seen on social media have confirmed another of our concerns – that many Canadians are not aware of how the eu

UN committee calls on Canada to repeal euthanasia for people who are not dying
Canada is facing international pressure to walk back its expansion of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) and not to expand it further. In strongly worded concluding remarks, released March 21, 2025, the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recommends Canada repeal the law allowing euthanasia for people who are not dying, known as Track 2 MAiD. It also recommends Canada stop the expansion of MAiD on the basis of mental illness alone and not allow euthanasia

Submission on MAiD to Alberta government consultation
The Government of Alberta held a consultation on safeguards and the oversight of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in the fall of 2024. The EFC participated in stakeholder meetings and submitted a written brief. The EFC’s written response asked the province to protect patients by allowing MAiD-free spaces and by adding a specific end-of-life definition and other safeguards. The response also addressed issues such as expanding MAiD on the basis of mental illness alone, eligib

Ten reasons to oppose advance requests for MAiD
The federal government recently launched a “national conversation” about allowing advance requests for medical assistance in dying (MAiD). The national conversation includes an online questionnaire that is open to the public until February 14, 2025. An advance request for MAiD would allow a person’s life to be ended when they are no longer able to consent. This is different and more specific than an advance directive on health care, in which a person indicates their prioriti

Supporting Canadian pastors in addressing social issues
This fall the EFC held simultaneous gatherings for Toronto-area pastors and national denominational leaders. EFC missiologist Jon Fuller reflects why both are important. The pastor in front of me leaned over to take a picture of the slide on the screen. As a pastor myself, I’ve learned to look for signs of interest from those listening to a presentation, and taking screenshots with your cellphone certainly qualifies. We were attending the EFC Pastor’s Day, a new event series

Submission on human trafficking and MAiD to UN committee CEDAW
The EFC has made a submission to a UN committee reviewing Canada's commitment to eliminate discrimination against women (CEDAW). The EFC's brief outlines the negative impact of Canada’s euthanasia laws on women, particularly women with disabilities. It underscores that prostitution is a system of violence and exploitation, and points to the connection between human trafficking and prostitution. The EFC urges Canada to repeal the law allowing euthanasia for mental illness, to

An Update on MAiD
More and more of us are seeing the impact of MAiD as it touches the people in our lives. People in vulnerable situations are ending their lives via MAiD because they feel they have no other choice – and some are pressured to do so. There’s also a growing realization of the very subjective nature of the MAiD eligibility criteria. At the same time, there’s a push to expand MAiD even further and to eliminate MAiD-free spaces for patients and doctors who are conscientious objecto

Bill S-248: Advance request for MAiD
A private member’s bill that would allow advance requests for euthanasia is moving through the Senate. Bill S-248 was introduced by Senator Pamela Wallin and has passed two of three votes in the Senate. The next step is for the bill to be studied by a Senate committee. The Criminal Code requires a person be able to consent to their death at the time their life is ended through MAiD. There is currently a narrow exception for people whose death is “reasonably foreseeable” for t

Refuge contre l'euthanasie
Traduit de l'anglais par François Godbout Les Canadiens et leurs familles veulent être soignés par des médecins et du personnel médical qui respectent leurs valeurs et leurs croyances. An important win in a long battle against MAiD's expansion
We are so thankful to have good news to share about euthanasia laws in Canada! Let’s pause for a moment to be thankful and celebrate. It’s not the complete stop that we want and firmly believe should happen, but a delay of MAiD for mental illness means people in vulnerable moments will be better protected for a longer time. It’s at least a check to the momentum of rapid MAiD expansion. Here’s what’s happening Yesterday the committee studying medical assistance in dying (MA
