The power of diplomacy
This article is reprinted with permission from Faith Today (Jan/Feb 2024). →en français Canadians are known for being nice. We are even teased for saying sorry when others would not bother. But being taught politeness, an element of this niceness, can also circumvent saying what we think. Our society revels in differences over sports and food, but when we dissent on other issues of taste, appearance or behaviour, do we not hold our tongues to avoid embarrassment or tension? D

What’s it gonna take?
This article is reprinted with permission from Faith Today (Jan/Feb 2024). →en français Have you ever heard of a 2,000th anniversary? Believe it or not, we are on the verge of one in the not-too-distant future. I’m talking, of course, about the bimillennial anniversary of the betrothed bride of Jesus Christ in 2033. Talk about a long engagement! What will the state of the Church be in 2033? If Jesus doesn’t come back before then, I think most of us would be thrilled to see th

10 days of action on MAiD for mental illness
The justice minister has suggested a delay of the March 17 implementation date might be possible. That would give more time to try to stop this misguided expansion. (Why? See TheEFC.ca/HaltMAID.) Please contact your MP in at least one way in the next 10 days to reach them before Parliament resumes Jan. 29. Step 1: Find your MP’s contact info using your postal code, www.ourcommons.ca/members/en. This site has the MP’s email, address and phone numbers for the MP’s local constit

Submission on conscience to CPS Alberta
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta asked for feedback on its policy on conscientious objection by Jan. 15, 2024. One of the proposed changes introduces “effective referrals” into the policy. Many doctors object to ending the lives of their patients through euthanasia and would object to providing an effective referral for it. The EFC made a three-page submission, which you can download as a PDF.

Loving our neighbour through advocacy
Why do we engage in policy discussions, as Christians? Politics is messy; it can be complex and sometimes dysfunctional, and sometimes it seems so hard to make a difference. But what the law says matters. Laws and policies affect how people are treated, what options they have or don’t have, who is protected, who is helped. When the Canada Summer Jobs program screens employers based on their beliefs, real ministries and organizations are excluded. Youth who would have been

Celebrating a legal win and remaining vigilant
Download the full, four-page PDF of the December/January issue, or read the main story below. Aussi disponible en français. The EFC is celebrating a decision by an Ontario court this fall that found Canada’s prostitution laws to be constitutional. The current laws protect human dignity and equality – so it’s illegal to buy sex, arrange for the sale of another person or receive a benefit from the sale of another person’s sexual services. As an intervener in this court case t
