Alberta is approaching a referendum crossroads on October 19 and the EFC's David Guretzki invites readers to pray with and for Albertans and the process the province is engaging.

Will you join us in a week of prayer for our local MPs? The House of Commons resumes on Sept. 21, 2026, after the summer recess. We have a prayer for each day in the week leading up to Sept. 21 that you could use in your personal time of prayer, in small groups or congregations. Let's ask God to bless our local MPs and our country. Consider sending your MP a note to thank them for their service to the community and let them know you're praying for them. Let’s pray for our loc

The positive contribution of faith communities in Canada is being challenged by a new series of initiatives targeting religious institutions and public religious expression. Many of the challenges are grouped together in a disturbing committee report on the advancement of secularization presented to the Quebec government in August. The 300-page report provides a comprehensive vision of what government-imposed secularization could entail. The 50 recommendations include making

If this column were longer, we could walk in-detail through recent Canadian public policy examples such as: parliamentary recommendations calling for an end to “advancement of religion” as a charitable purpose and an end to charitable status for “anti-abortion organizations;” restrictio

The Department of Finance is holding consultations on what should be in the next budget. Consider filling out the questionnaire before August 28, 2025 and suggesting they support your community by not politicizing charities, including pro-life charities, and by maintaining the charitable status of advancing religion.

A new Canadian Armed Forces policy, Spiritual reflections in a miliary setting, forbids military chaplains from praying or referring to God or the divine in spiritual reflections. The policy applies to chaplains when speaking at government sponsored events or where members of the Canadian Armed Forces are expected or required to attend. It also applies when they are speaking publicly in their capacity as CAF members, including at Remembrance Day ceremonies. The new policy d

This includes the resignation of a prime minister, the election of a new one, ongoing threats of tariffs and counter-tariffs, and all the drama of a federal election (the outcome of which, as I write this, remains unknown). In such times of geopolitical upheaval, the Church has often stepped in to offer theol

This article is reprinted with permission from Faith Today (May/Jun 2025). →en français Prices, pensions and employment levels are fluctuating unpredictably in response to tariffs and tariff threats. We’ve seen clashing ideas about our national priorities and what exactly binds us together during the recent federal election, as candidates and their party leaders proposed different approaches to the issues confronting us as a country. Now we need to hear how our newly elected

The Right Honourable Mark Carney Prime Minister of Canada 80 Wellington Street Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2 Dear Prime Minister, On behalf of The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC), I offer sincere congratulations on your election victory. We are praying for you as you serve our nation at a critical time in history. We pray also for you and your family as you face the new demands of time and expectations of your office. This is a time of great turbulence in the world and for Canada

The results are in from the federal election. The Liberal Party was elected in the most ridings and the new Prime Minister is Mark Carney. We’ve voted and heard the results. What comes next? First, let’s look to the Lord of heaven and earth. Our hope is not in any particular political party or government, but in God. The nations are a drop in a bucket or dust on the scales before him (Isaiah 40:15). Trusting in God’s love, forgiveness and help orients us in our world, especia

The Prime Minister has announced he will step down as leader of the Liberal Party once a new leader is chosen. This triggers a leadership selection process within the Liberal Party. The Prime Minister has asked the Governor General to prorogue Parliament until March 24, 2025 and she has agreed. What does it mean to prorogue Parliament? This is like a pause and reset. The House of Commons and Senate won’t meet until March 24. All government bills and unfinished business are te

Providing medical care is a consistent characteristic of Christian expression throughout Church history. In Medicine and Health Care in Early Christianity (Johns Hopkins, 2009), historian Gary Ferngren concludes that when a church was planted in the Roman Empire, medica

Could we introduce ourselves? Because I think you might not know us. There’s been some chatter in political circles about a certain party leader visiting three evangelical Christian churches on a recent summer Sunday. I listened to a podcast about politics, where the panelists and host talk about the risk of this kind of visit and whether this is importing US style politics into Canada. They ask questions like, “Why does this raise eyebrows?” “Why isn’t this more risk than re

The harassment that members of Parliament face, including death threats and vandalism, is on the rise. Two months ago the House of Commons sergeant-at-arms reported that cases rose from 8 in 2019 to 530 in 2023. Threats are becoming increasingly common – MPs are followed on the streets, filmed in stores and have their offices vandalized. One Parliament Hill staffer describes answering the phone and having angry Canadians yell at her about the decisions the MP had made and cal

We are so thankful to have good news to share about euthanasia laws in Canada! Let’s pause for a moment to be thankful and celebrate. It’s not the complete stop that we want and firmly believe should happen, but a delay of MAiD for mental illness means people in vulnerable moments will be better protected for a longer time. It’s at least a check to the momentum of rapid MAiD expansion. Here’s what’s happening Yesterday the committee studying medical assistance in dying (MA

This article is reprinted with permission from Faith Today (Jan/Feb 2024). →en français Canadians are known for being nice. We are even teased for saying sorry when others would not bother. But being taught politeness, an element of this niceness, can also circumvent saying what we think. Our society revels in differences over sports and food, but when we dissent on other issues of taste, appearance or behaviour, do we not hold our tongues to avoid embarrassment or tension? D

Why do we engage in policy discussions, as Christians? Politics is messy; it can be complex and sometimes dysfunctional, and sometimes it seems so hard to make a difference. But what the law says matters. Laws and policies affect how people are treated, what options they have or don’t have, who is protected, who is helped. When the Canada Summer Jobs program screens employers based on their beliefs, real ministries and organizations are excluded. Youth who would have been
